RV Sales on the Rise Thanks to Baby Boomers
Everywhere you go you hear about how baby boomers are affecting our economy as they retire. Social security benefits will be affected as well as Medicare benefits, just to name a couple. This is the main focus of the great debates of our government and politicians right now as they make their run for office in 2016. But, not all parts of the economy that will be affected are bad. The RV industry has actually seen great improvements in sales thanks to these baby boomers.
Over the next 25 years, baby boomers will continue to retire and many are looking for different ways to spend their retirement. What better way than to buy an RV and retire to the freedom of the road! According to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, RV shipments are up 5.5% from 2014; up 5.1% this year alone through July. Motorhome sales are up almost 6%, accounting for 12% of the markets sales; and Towable RV sales are up 5.5%, accounting for 88% of the markets sales. These are some of the highest numbers they have seen since 2006 when sales were at their lowest.
So what are the top sellers? Toy haulers, travel trailers, and Class C motor homes. Part of the reason for this, the RVIA reports, is that newer model RV’s are smaller and less expensive than before the recession hit in 2006. Motorhomes ranging around $25,000 are popular with baby boomers and younger buyers because they are more affordable and still offer the amount of amenities needed to live life on the road. Also, this new “tiny home movement” has been increasing in popularity because it is a more economical way of living.
Also on the rise are sales of the “retro-style” travel trailers with modern amenities. More and more manufacturers are bringing back the retro style teardrop trailers from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s and revamping them to make them more attractive to modern day buyers. One of the perks, they can be pulled by almost any vehicle with towing capabilities. So you don’t have to go out and buy a brand new pickup truck or SUV just to haul your new travel trailer.
The RVIA doesn’t expect sales to drop off anytime soon. More and more people are becoming comfortable with spending money on RV’s, and the industry will continue to grow in sales as baby boomers continue to retire.
